SAP CO - Controlling

SAP CO shows where a cost arises, what a product really costs and how much margin each customer leaves behind. In S/4HANA, CO actuals sit in the same table as FI: cost elements are G/L accounts, and management reports read the same lines as statutory ones.

Flow

Following one energy bill

A single cost posting moves through the cost centers into cost of goods sold and, finally, margin.

Scope

What we build in SAP CO

Current state

S/4HANA differences in SAP CO

  • KA01 and KA06 are gone: a cost element is a G/L account created in FS00 with a cost element category. OKB9 keeps default account assignment; allocations post to secondary cost accounts.
  • Actual CO data goes to ACDOCA instead of COEP and COSS, plan data to ACDOCP. KP06 left the menu but still runs, and new reports do not show its results. SAP points to SAP Analytics Cloud.
  • Material Ledger is mandatory. SAP recommends Margin Analysis; costing-based CO-PA is frozen on premise and absent in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition (new name: SAP Cloud ERP) and UPA.
  • Universal Allocation has covered actual overhead allocations since 1909. Under UPA, production costs post event-based (3F0): goods issues, confirmations and goods receipts update WIP.

Localization

Türkiye: class 7 accounts and valuation

  • TDHP options 7/A and 7/B

Option 7/A uses the function-based groups 71-78, option 7/B the nature-based group 79. SAP's Turkish version has a month-end closing report for class 7 expense accounts.

  • Allocations versus transfers

CO allocations and TDHP transfer postings can describe the same cost flow twice. Decide during design which flow is statutory and which serves management.

  • Inflation and inventory cost

No tax inflation adjustment in fiscal years 2025-2027 (Law 7571). For IAS 29 restatement of inventory and COGS, SAP has no standard Türkiye solution; an add-on is needed.

FAQ

Common questions about SAP CO

What is SAP CO, and how does it differ from SAP FI?

SAP FI serves external reporting: statutory books, the balance sheet and tax. SAP CO serves internal management by showing where costs arise, what products cost and how profitable each customer is. In S/4HANA both share the same Universal Journal posting, so no reconciliation is needed between them.

Is the Material Ledger mandatory? Is actual costing?

The Material Ledger is mandatory in S/4HANA for inventory valuation. Actual costing is optional; when active, it calculates a periodic unit price at period end and spreads variances to inventory and COGS. The material's price control, standard (S) or moving average (V), stays as it is.

How often is actual costing run?

Material Ledger actual costing runs at each period end, usually month end, in CKMLCP. Under Universal Parallel Accounting, production costs post through the event-based solution (3F0): goods issue, activity confirmation and goods receipt update WIP, and the variance posts when the order is finally delivered or technically completed.

Margin Analysis or costing-based CO-PA?

In S/4HANA, SAP recommends account-based profitability, known as Margin Analysis, and develops new features only there. Costing-based CO-PA can still be used on premise, but not in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition (SAP Cloud ERP) or with Universal Parallel Accounting. Margin Analysis works with a COGS split and can show production variances by variance category.

When should an internal order be used?

For time-bound work that must be tracked apart from a cost center's routine spending: campaigns, events, small investments and accruals. Investment orders settle to assets under construction. Maintenance fits an SAP PM maintenance order better, and large projects an SAP PS WBS element.

Is budget control the same as a plan/actual report?

No. Plan/actual reports show the deviation, while budget availability control warns or stops a posting when the budget is exceeded. It is used on internal orders and projects, and since S/4HANA 1909 also on cost centers through Budget Availability Control for Cost Centers.
