SAP PP/DS - Production Planning and Detailed Scheduling

SAP PP/DS (Production Planning and Detailed Scheduling) plans critical products and bottleneck resources against the resource schedule, component availability and exact order times; the result is a finite production sequence that can run. It used to be part of APO; today it runs inside S/4HANA.

Infinite plan to finite schedule in SAP PP/DS

SAP describes two steps: plan supply first without regard to capacity, then sequence the bottleneck resource against its real capacity.

Comparison

Three setups: embedded, side-car, APO

All three use CIF. What changes is where the integration model lives and which way master data flows.

  • Embedded PP/DS

    Inside S/4HANA

    • Integration model points to itself
    • No distribution definition
    • A material flag sets the scope
    • PP/DS to S/4HANA without queues
    • S/4HANA to PP/DS through a queue
  • Side-car (DSC edition)

    Separate S/4HANA over CIF

    • Connects to ERP or S/4HANA via CIF
    • Models created and activated in ERP
    • Master data flows ERP to PP/DS
    • Transaction data both ways
  • APO (SAP SCM 7.0)

On the Business Suite 7 clock

    • Mainstream maintenance ends 2027
    • Optional extension to end-2030
    • Target: IBP, S/4HANA or both

Current state

What changes with embedded PP/DS

  • PP/DS is now part of S/4HANA; no separate APO system is installed. SAP lists it for on-premise and private cloud, and the Advanced Planning flag brings a material into scope.
  • CIF stays but gets simpler: the integration model points to the system itself, with no distribution definition. Orders go from PP/DS to S/4HANA without queues, back through a queue.
  • Flow manufacturing (LDB1, LDD1, LAS1) is in compatibility scope (ID 449); PP/DS model mix planning replaces it. On-premise rights ended 31 May 2026; Private Cloud keeps them to 31 Dec 2033.
  • The CM21-CM25 graphical planning table is compatibility scope too (ID 451). SAP points to CPS apps for simple cases and embedded PP/DS when BOM levels or several bottlenecks must align.

Localization

Shifts and capacity in Türkiye

  • Night shifts capped at 7.5 hours

Turkish Labor Law No. 4857 caps night work at seven and a half hours and bans overtime at night, so night-shift capacity on the resource must reflect that.

  • Eleven hours between shift changes

A worker moving to another shift must first rest at least eleven hours without interruption, which shapes weekly shift rotation and the resource calendar.

  • Shift scenarios

Two-shift and one-shift models can be simulated in separate planning versions and compared. Overtime assumptions must stay within the legal cap of 270 hours a year.

FAQ

SAP PP/DS: questions that come up often

What is SAP PP/DS, and what sets it apart from MRP Live?

SAP PP/DS creates procurement proposals for in-house production and external procurement, and plans the resource schedule and order dates and times in detail, taking resource and component availability into account. MRP produces an infinite plan that ignores capacity. SAP describes planning critical products in PP/DS and uncritical ones in S/4HANA.

Does embedded PP/DS need an extra license?

It may. SAP's S/4HANA 2025 feature scope description lists PP/DS among the Enhanced LoB functions and notes that this section may need a separate license. According to the Simplification List, it is available on-premise and in the private cloud. Check the scope of your contract before activating it.

Is CIF still needed with embedded PP/DS?

Yes, in a slimmer form. The integration model points to S/4HANA itself, with no distribution definitions or publication types. Orders for materials flagged for Advanced Planning are transferred without an integration model. The flow from PP/DS to S/4HANA has no queue, the reverse does, and SAP recommends CIF post-processing for errors.

When does maintenance for APO PP/DS end?

SAP counts APO as a component of SAP SCM. SAP Supply Chain Management 7.0 is a Business Suite 7 core application, with mainstream maintenance until end-2027 and optional extended maintenance through end-2030. Customers who skip the extension move to customer-specific maintenance.

Where does PP/DS go when we leave APO?

SAP names three paths: SAP IBP, the planning built into S/4HANA, or both. For PP/DS the target is either embedded PP/DS in S/4HANA or a separate S/4HANA system placed next to ERP with the DSC edition; in the latter, master data comes from ERP and integration models are activated there.

How do PP/DS and SAP IBP split the work?

The production planning integration of SAP IBP combines the operational supply plan of order-based planning (OBP) with the detailed planning and scheduling of PP/DS. IBP takes the supply decision and PP/DS turns it into resources, sequence and times.
