SAP TM - Transportation Management
SAP TM (Transportation Management) decides how goods travel, which carrier takes them and what the trip costs. Demand from sales or purchasing is split into freight units and assigned to trips, and the carrier's charge reaches accounting through a service purchase order.

Scope
Typical scope of an SAP TM project
Locations and network
Plants and shipping points become locations; zones, lanes, default routes and sea or air schedules are defined.
Freight unit building rules
Rules that decide which items go into one freight unit and within which quantity limits.
Trip planning
Assigning freight units to trips in the Transportation Cockpit (/SCMTMS/PLN), driven by planning profiles and rules.
Carrier selection and tendering
Direct tendering, or freight RFQs sent to carriers one after another or all at once; tendering profiles.
Freight agreements and rates
Charges from freight agreements, calculation sheets, rate tables and scales; agreement RFQs for annual tenders.
Settlement and accruals
Service orders and entry sheets from the settlement document; TM reference in MIRO; accounts from the service master.
Current state
Transport in S/4HANA: from LE-TRA to SAP TM
- LE-TRA ends at end-2030 on premise and at end-2033 under an SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition (new name: SAP Cloud ERP Private) contract. Then shipments (VT01N) and cost documents stop.
- Routes and route determination moved into permanent scope and keep working after 2030 in orders, stock transfers and delivery scheduling. They are not integrated with TM.
- SAP does not plan a standard migration tool from LE-TRA to TM. The move is a new implementation, covering the transport network, carriers and freight agreements.
- TM has run inside S/4HANA since 1709. The basic scope needs no extra license but only runs embedded; a separate side-by-side system requires the full license.
Localization
e-Dispatch notes, freight and trade
Vehicle data on e-Dispatch notes
The GİB guide makes the vehicle plate and the driver's name and ID number, or the carrier firm's details, mandatory. TM assigns carrier and driver on the freight order.
E-Dispatch NoteCarrier e-Invoices
Carriers bill freight as e-Invoices or e-Archive invoices. They are matched to the service order and entry sheet from freight settlement and posted in MIRO.
E-InvoiceFreight and the Import Package
In the Import and Export Package, freight is a manual cost type that can be linked to the shipping document; automatic transfer from freight settlement is not standard.

Recurring problems in SAP TM rollouts
- Teams expect a tool to move LE-TRA into TM. SAP does not plan a standard migration tool. Budget TM as a new implementation, close open shipment cost documents before cut-over and remember that routes stay in permanent scope.
- Deliveries reach TM but cannot be planned. Usually a location is missing: the shipping point, the customer or the carrier has none in TM. Create locations in bulk with the standard report and test the whole network before go-live.
- Freight accruals and invoices drift apart. When rate tables are not maintained, the accrual from the settlement document stops matching the incoming e-Invoice. Rate tables need an owner, an agreed tolerance and a written dispute path.
- Users expect functions the license lacks. SAP lists the difference between basic and advanced scope in the TM release information note for each release. A function-by-license table in the blueprint, checked against that list, settles the debate early.
FAQ
SAP TM: frequently asked questions
What is SAP TM?
SAP TM is SAP's transport planning and freight management solution. It turns inbound and outbound shipments into trips, selects or tenders the carrier, calculates the charge from the freight agreement and settles with the carrier. It has run inside S/4HANA since release 1709; the full name is SAP S/4HANA Supply Chain for Transportation Management.
How long can LE-TRA be used in S/4HANA?
Until the end of 2030 in on-premise S/4HANA; SAP granted that exception to LE-TRA, CS and PP-PI. On RISE with SAP and SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition (SAP Cloud ERP Private) systems the right ends on 31 December 2033; both dates are in SAP Note 2269324. Shipments and cost documents stop once it expires; with no migration tool, moving to TM is a new implementation.
Embedded TM or side-by-side TM?
A company with one S/4HANA system that runs its own distribution is usually well served by embedded TM, since master data and deliveries sit in the same system. A central transport unit serving several ERP systems may justify a side-by-side setup. The basic scope is only available embedded; side-by-side needs the full license.
How does SAP TM feed the Turkish e-Dispatch note?
The e-Dispatch note must carry the vehicle plate and driver, or the carrier firm, plus the actual dispatch date with hour and minute. Because carrier and driver are assigned to the freight order in TM, a project can design the carrier section of the note to be filled from there. The note must reach GİB, or the private integrator, before the goods actually leave.
How is a freight invoice posted in SAP?
Posting the freight settlement document creates a service purchase order and a service entry sheet in MM and books the accrual. The carrier's e-Invoice is then checked against these records in MIRO. The TM reference tab in MIRO appears once the user has the TM_INVOICE_CLERK parameter.
Are SAP TM screens Fiori apps?
On-premise and in private cloud, most transactional screens are still Web Dynpro: the Transportation Cockpit, freight orders, freight agreements. Fiori covers tendering (F2679), execution (F2675) and transportation cost (F2672) analytics plus carrier collaboration apps. Manage Freight Orders (F3635) exists only in the Public Edition.
