SAP aATP - Advanced Available-to-Promise
SAP aATP looks at stock, future receipts and competing orders and proposes when, and how much, a sales or production requirement can be confirmed. When supply tightens, it redistributes existing confirmations by priority rules and keeps quotas per region and customer.

Process
From order to delivery in SAP aATP
A confirmation is given at order entry, recalculated by backorder processing when supply shifts, and checked again before delivery.

Comparison
BOP confirmation strategies
Each requirement falls into a segment, each segment into a strategy. The check sequence decides who gets scarce stock first.
Win and Gain
Confirmations to protect
- Win: full confirmation on the date
- Gain: keeps its confirmation or improves
- If unmet, an exception may stop the run
- SAP advises a fallback variant
Improve and Redistribute
Confirmations that may move
- Improve: tries to improve, may lose
- Redistribute: better, equal or worse
- Can free quantity for higher priority
Fill and Lose
Quantities that get released
- Fill: no extra quantity or earlier date
- Lose: confirmation is taken away
- Lose is evaluated first
- Skip: left out of the check
Scope
What we set up in SAP aATP projects
Checking groups and scope
Switching on Advanced ATP per checking group and deciding in OVZ2 and OVZ9 which stock, receipts and demand count.
Product allocation objects
Period quotas by region or customer; allocation sequences in F2474 and planning data in F2121.
BOP segments and variants
Segment order, confirmation strategy and fallback variant; runs scheduled in F2665 and checked in F2159.
Alternative plant, site, product
Substitution strategies (F2699) and alternative controls (F2698) in ABC, offering another source when stock runs short.
Supply protection groups
Protected quantities for a key channel or customer group that less important demand cannot consume.
Confirmation backed by production
With SBC, a shortage triggers production planning in PP/DS and the confirmation follows that supply and capacity.
Current state
Classic ATP to aATP: scope, licensing and tables
- According to SAP, standard S/4HANA ATP covers the product availability check and rescheduling; aATP adds release for delivery, the product allocation check and backorder processing.
- Licensing depends on deployment: features behind Use Advanced ATP Functions are standard in the S/4HANA Cloud license, but on-premise they need a dedicated aATP license.
- The VBBS totals table is gone; every ATP requirement is stored individually in VBBE, and the old ERP ATP code reads VBBE too. Custom code reading VBBS moves to a view on VBBE.
- The advanced check cannot be combined with the check against planning and does not run on a dedicated ATP server; in both cases the item is not checked and an error is raised.
Localization
Scarce stock and exports in Türkiye
Period quotas across dealers
Product allocation sets aside period quantities by region or customer, so the first dealer to order cannot take all scarce stock and later orders still get a share.
One shipping point for exports
With release 2025, ABC can pool partial stock from several warehouses via internal transfers, which SAP highlights for customs declarations and letter-of-credit exports.

Where SAP aATP projects tend to get stuck
- Check against planning clashes with aATP. If the check against planning is also active in a group with the advanced check, the item is not checked and an error appears. We list these materials before go-live and choose a method for each.
- Win and Gain segments run without a fallback. When these strategies cannot hold a confirmation, an exception stops the run per material or entirely. SAP strongly recommends a fallback variant, and we set it up before the first live run.
- Fixed-date items never enter BOP. Order items flagged Fixed Date and Quantity are left out of backorder processing. If sales sets the flag out of habit, the run cannot redistribute as expected, so the flag needs a written rule.
- Two kinds of check in one sales order. Because aATP is switched on per checking group, one item can be confirmed by the classic check and the next by the advanced one. We review checking group assignments before go-live.
FAQ
SAP aATP: questions we get asked
What does SAP aATP add to classic ATP?
SAP aATP is the S/4HANA business function that proposes confirmed dates and quantities for sales and production requirements, based on stock, planned receipts and competing orders. Basic ATP stops at the availability check and rescheduling; aATP adds product allocation, backorder processing, alternative-based confirmation, supply protection and release for delivery.
Does aATP need its own license?
It depends on how you run S/4HANA. According to SAP Learning, features switched on with Use Advanced ATP Functions are standard in the S/4HANA Cloud license but not in the on-premise Enterprise license, where the active switch requires a dedicated aATP license. SAP's feature scope description also lists aATP among the Enhanced LoB functions that may need a separate license.
How is backorder processing (BOP) set up?
Requirements are grouped into segments, each segment is assigned a confirmation strategy (Win, Gain, Improve, Redistribute, Fill, Lose), and these come together in a variant (F2160). Runs are scheduled in F2665 and results read in F2159. The check sequence decides which requirement gets scarce stock first.
How does aATP work with PP/DS and SAP IBP?
The link to PP/DS is Supply Creation-Based Confirmation: if stock is short, production is planned and the confirmation reflects finite capacity and component availability. With the IBP Response Planning-based check, the order first gets a zero confirmation and the real one comes back from the IBP run; ABC, product allocation and BOP are not available with that check type.
We still run APO GATP. Where should we go?
SAP describes APO as a component of SAP SCM and points out that SCM 7.0 reaches the end of mainstream maintenance in the coming years. The targets it names are SAP IBP, the supply chain planning built into S/4HANA, or a mix of both. Readiness Check for SAP Supply Chain Solutions shows how GATP is used in your system today.
How do transport durations feed the delivery date?
Since S/4HANA 2023 FPS01, sales order scheduling through aATP and Business Process Scheduling can take transport durations from the TRS capability of SAP TM. TM and SD have to run in the same S/4HANA system, and freight units are created when the order is saved.
