SAP Fiori - User Experience
SAP Fiori is the SAP design system and the primary user interface of S/4HANA; users do their work in apps opened from a launchpad arranged around their role. A Fiori project usually starts with opening the right standard apps to the right roles, well before any new app is written.
Process
Activation in SAP Fiori, from role to app
An app is found, its service switched on, then placed in a role and on a page; only then does the user see the tile.

Comparison
From groups to spaces and pages
The old home page is on its way out; the new model is built on pages that travel with the role.
Groups
The old home page model
- Deprecated in 2021
- Removal planned for a later release
- Designer features deprecated in 2023
- My Home does not run in this mode
- Removal announced for Public Edition
Spaces and pages
Since S/4HANA 2020
- Space, page, section, tile chain
- Space assigned in the PFCG role
- Managed with F4834 and F4512
- Prerequisite for My Home
- Switched on with SPACES parameter
Scope
Launchpad, app and theme work
Role-based launchpad
Business catalogs and roles in the customer namespace; space, page and section layout, with My Home as the entry.
Content activation
STC01 task lists switch on the apps, OData services and ICF nodes of the selected business roles together.
RAP and Fiori elements
List Report, Object Page, Worklist and Analytical List Page screens generated from RAP services with annotations.
Freestyle SAPUI5
SAPUI5 built with SAP Fiori tools in VS Code or Business Application Studio, for interactions no template covers.
Horizon-based theme
Corporate theme at logo and color level in UI theme designer; light, dark and high-contrast variants.
Work Zone and Mobile Start
SAP Build Work Zone to bring several systems under one entry point, and SAP Mobile Start as the phone entry.
Current state
What S/4HANA releases brought to SAP Fiori
- Fiori is now the primary UI and some functions evolve in Fiori. 2025 FPS01 gave Universal Allocation a new Manage Allocations version (F3338A) and F7272 for tracking cycle changes.
- The group-based home page was deprecated in 2021; key launchpad designer features have been deprecated since 2023, and My Home arrived with 2023 FPS01.
- In the ABAP Platform 2023 (S/4HANA 2023) launchpad documentation, Morning Horizon is the default theme. Horizon first shipped with S/4HANA Cloud 2202 and SAPUI5 1.102.
- An embedded front-end server is the recommended setup; SAP states that moving from a hub to embedded must happen before an upgrade to S/4HANA 2027.
Localization
Turkish UI and local screens
The i and İ problem
Case conversion in JavaScript without a locale breaks the i/İ and ı/I pairs, so search and filters in custom apps must compare with the Turkish locale.
Turkish texts and formats
Turkish texts in custom apps sit in i18n_tr.properties; decimal separators and date formats should match the SU01 user defaults.
e-Document monitoring screens
e-Invoice, e-Archive and e-Dispatch monitoring screens go into the spaces of accounting and shipping roles, so the role decides who sees which document.
E-Invoice
From the field
Four observations from SAP Fiori projects
- The tile shows, but the app will not open. The catalog decides what can be opened and the space and page where it appears; backend authorization is separate. Check S_SERVICE, app authorizations and the OData service with SU53 and /IWFND/ERROR_LOG.
- Hundreds of tiles on a single page. SAP recommends no more than 100 apps per catalog; hundreds of tiles on one page usually mean the role was cut too wide. Splitting roles by actual work and cutting back on dynamic tiles also shows in load time.
- The corporate theme breaks with each update. Adjustments that reach deep into the base theme need rework at every release. Staying at logo and color level in UI theme designer keeps the maintenance small.
- Freestyle SAPUI5 apps keep piling up. Each freestyle app needs its own upkeep, and together they become a burden. Once list and object page scenarios move to RAP and Fiori elements, the screen layout lives in annotations instead of code.
FAQ
SAP Fiori: the questions we get most
What is SAP Fiori, and does it replace SAP GUI?
SAP Fiori is the SAP design system and the name for the apps built with it; it is the primary user interface of S/4HANA. SAP GUI transactions can keep running in the launchpad through SAP GUI for HTML, so the move usually happens role by role.
What are spaces and pages, and how do we move from groups?
A space is a role's workspace and a page sits within it; sections and tiles make up the page content. The group-based home page has been deprecated since 2021. The move happens role by role: create a space in Manage Launchpad Spaces (F4834), convert groups with Create Launchpad Pages from Groups, edit pages in Manage Launchpad Pages (F4512) and assign the space to the role.
How do we find out which standard apps to use?
Search the SAP Fiori Apps Reference Library by role, line of business and release. Upload a transaction usage profile from ST03N to Fiori Apps Recommendations, and it lists the apps that correspond to the transactions you actually use.
Fiori elements or freestyle SAPUI5?
For list, object page, worklist and analytical screens, Fiori elements builds ready-made page templates from annotations; it works directly with a RAP service and is extended through extension points and building blocks. Freestyle SAPUI5 is for interactions that do not fit a template, and SAP Fiori tools offers templates for both.
Does Fiori work on phones and tablets?
It depends on the app. Each app's supported form factors (desktop, tablet, phone) are listed in the Apps Reference Library; Manage Launchpad Spaces (F4834), for example, is desktop-only. SAP Mobile Start is the mobile entry point; the SAP Fiori Client was removed from the app stores on 31 March 2022.
What is the Horizon theme, and can we apply our corporate colors?
Horizon is SAP Fiori's current theme family; in the ABAP Platform 2023 (S/4HANA 2023) documentation, Morning Horizon is the launchpad's default theme. UI theme designer lets you add your logo and corporate colors, while changing the base theme deeply adds maintenance at every update.
