SAP Digital Manufacturing - Manufacturing Execution (MES)
SAP Digital Manufacturing (SAP DM) is SAP's cloud manufacturing execution system, sold as a subscription on SAP BTP. It takes orders from SAP S/4HANA and moves each unit through the routing as an SFC (shop floor control), recording measurements, assemblies, nonconformances and confirmations.

What we cover in SAP DM projects
Role-based operator screens
POD Designer builds work center, operation, order and monitor screens; plugins are placed by drag and drop.
SFCs, serial numbers and labels
SFCs created from serialized orders, SFC split and merge, and printing of labels and travelers for each SFC.
Nonconformance and rework
NC code hierarchies, rework and scrap decisions; codes can be synced from SAP QM defect code groups.
Assembly records and genealogy
Component assembly and floor stock consumption, with component genealogy and activity history per SFC and batch.
OEE and loss reasons
Overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) time models and reason codes; availability, performance and quality losses.

Current state
What to know about a cloud MES
- SAP's 2026 calendar has releases 2602, 2605, 2608 and 2611, with 2704, 2707 and 2710 planned for 2027. A new Production Connector version ships on the day of the quality upgrade.
- Subscriptions open in eu22 in Germany (Microsoft Azure), us10 (AWS) and us20 (Microsoft Azure) in the US; SAP's list has no data center in Türkiye.
- SAP S/4HANA and SAP ERP connect through SAP CPI (new name: SAP Integration Suite, Cloud Integration), and one instance can serve several S/4HANA systems.
- SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition (new name: SAP Cloud ERP) needs neither that middleware nor Cloud Connector; data exchange is set up in the Communication Management apps.

Serial and batch numbers
Article 7 of Law 7223 makes manufacturers ensure products legibly carry any batch and serial numbers required by regulation. SAP DM puts the serial in the SFC name.
Affected units in a recall
The same article requires records of nonconforming and recalled products and prompt corrective action. SFC genealogy shows which units received a faulty component batch.
Operator records and KVKK
SAP DM holds personnel and labor records in data centers in Germany or the US. Transfers fall under KVKK Article 9, and Article 4 keeps the scope proportionate.
From the field
SAP Digital Manufacturing settings to get right
- Scrap without a quantity takes the whole SFC. If no partial quantity is entered when scrapping in the Nonconformance Data Entry plugin, the full quantity of the released SFC is scrapped. SAP recommends making the quantity mandatory with Main Input Enforcement.
- No standard value keys, no order download. The standard value key download starts on its own after a work center download; if it fails, production orders do not come across. Its status shows in the Integration Message Dashboard.
- SAP PCo cloud components are out of maintenance. SAP Plant Connectivity (PCo) cloud components get no more fixes; SAP strongly recommends moving that configuration to the Production Connector. Automatic migration needs PCo 15.5.4 and Production Connector 2.7; 3.0 dropped it.
- SFC numbers can collide across ERP systems. By default a serialized SFC is named after the material and serial number. When several ERP systems connect, SAP advises adding a unique element such as the plant to the pattern.

What does SAP Digital Manufacturing do, and where does SAP PP hand over?
It is SAP's manufacturing execution system on SAP BTP, which SAP describes as a manufacturing operations management (MOM) platform. SAP PP plans and creates the order; the order comes down to SAP DM with its BOM and routing and runs on the shop floor SFC by SFC. Goods movements and quantity and activity confirmations go back to S/4HANA.
How long can we keep running SAP ME and SAP MII?
SAP has named 15.5 the final release of both. They run on SAP NetWeaver AS Java 7.5 and follow its timeline: mainstream maintenance ends in December 2027 and extended maintenance in December 2030. SAP presents SAP Digital Manufacturing as a suggested transition target rather than a direct successor, so custom MII logic usually has to be redesigned.
How is SAP Digital Manufacturing licensed?
SAP's product page lists execution, resource orchestration and insights as separate bundles. The feature scope description says some features can require a separate subscription license, and other SAP products you connect may need licenses of their own. Settle the scope bundle by bundle when you get the quote.
How does the shop floor keep working on a weak cloud connection?
SAP Digital Manufacturing for edge computing moves a defined set of functions to an edge system close to the shop floor and keeps production running on a weak cloud connection; configuration and business data are synchronized between edge and cloud. On the machine side, the Production Connector buffers data during temporary network interruptions.
Is quality inspection done in SAP QM or in SAP DM?
The two work together. In-process inspection lots come down from S/4HANA, operators enter results in the POD, and the results recording and inspection points go back to S/4HANA. A nonconformance logged with a defect code synced from SAP QM creates a production defect in S/4HANA.
Can SAP DM plan shifts and operator skills?
Yes, with Resource Orchestration. Production supervisors create workloads for work centers and resources, see capacity overloads, and assign shifts and work centers to operators. Skills and proficiency levels are uploaded from a file or retrieved from SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central.
