SAP MM - Materials Management

SAP MM follows what a company buys, from the first requisition to the supplier payment, and manages the quantity and value of its stock. Every goods movement creates a material document, and valuated stock gets an accounting document alongside it.

Process

Procure-to-pay in SAP MM

Each step creates an SAP document that refers back to the previous one, so an invoice can be traced to its order and receipt.

Three-way match

When an invoice is entered, its price and quantity are compared with the order and the goods receipt before payment is allowed.

  • Orderprice × quantity
  • Goods receiptquantity received
  • Invoiceinvoiced price × quantity

What we configure in SAP MM projects

Current state

What S/4HANA changed in SAP MM

  • Stock sits in one table (MATDOC) and quantities are derived from material documents on the fly. MB transactions such as MB1A and MB1B were replaced by MIGO and BAPI_GOODSMVT_CREATE.
  • Suppliers are maintained as Business Partners, and conversion cannot start until customer/vendor integration (CVI) is complete.
  • Material Ledger use is now mandatory and actual costing stays optional. Material numbers can be 40 characters long; MRP Live (MD01N) creates requisitions and planned orders in one run.
  • LIS-based supplier evaluation (ME61) and classic MRP lists were compatibility pack items: on-premise rights ended in May 2026, while a RISE subscription keeps them to end-2033.

Localization

Türkiye: e-documents and imports

  • Incoming e-Invoices

UBL-TR invoices from registered suppliers are matched to order and receipt, then posted. A commercial invoice is accepted or rejected in 8 days, else deemed accepted.

    E-Invoice
  • e-Dispatch: subcontract and return

SAP DRC can issue e-Dispatch Notes (e-İrsaliye) from a material document for subcontracting, supplier returns or plant transfers, but only to registered recipients.

    E-Dispatch Note
  • Import costs

Freight and customs charges sit as planned delivery costs on the PO; a carrier or customs office can invoice them separately; the invoice is posted after goods receipt.

FAQ

SAP MM: frequently asked questions

What is SAP MM?

SAP MM is the SAP logistics module for purchasing, inventory management and supplier invoice verification. In S/4HANA documentation the purchasing side is called "Sourcing and Procurement" and the stock side "Inventory Management"; the documents stay linked from requisition to payment.

Does MRP create purchase orders on its own?

Not directly. For externally procured materials MRP creates purchase requisitions, or schedule lines when a valid scheduling agreement exists. Requisitions with an assigned source become orders in a separate step, automatically with ME59N or by a buyer in F1048A.

What happens to the e-Dispatch Note when goods arrive short?

The recipient can report the quantity received, the quantity refused and the reason in an e-Dispatch Note Response. Full rejection is only valid before the goods are actually shipped; for goods sent back after partial acceptance the recipient issues a dispatch note of its own. The MIGO goods receipt step and the response process are therefore designed together.

How do RFQs work in S/4HANA?

One RFQ can go to several suppliers. It is created in Manage RFQs (F2049), and the quotations are compared side by side in Compare Supplier Quotations (F2324). An RFQ can also be passed to an external platform such as SAP Ariba Sourcing; the classic ME41 to ME4N transactions are deprecated.

How is supplier evaluation done in S/4HANA?

Supplier Evaluation apps calculate price, quantity, time, quality and questionnaire scores from documents, weighted in Supplier Evaluation Weighting and Scoring. On-premise rights to the classic LIS evaluation (ME61 and related) ended in May 2026. Per SAP Note 2269324, an SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition (new name: SAP Cloud ERP Private) subscription keeps them to end-2033.

How are incoming e-Invoices handled in SAP MM?

The UBL-TR invoice received through the Turkish Revenue Administration (GİB) is read by the integration layer, matched to the order and goods receipt and posted as a supplier invoice in MIRO or F0859. Price and quantity differences follow the normal tolerance rules, and the dispatch note number on the invoice helps the match.
