SAP EWM - Extended Warehouse Management

SAP EWM manages where stock sits down to the bin, in which handling unit and at which process step. S/4HANA knows stock by storage location; EWM turns each movement from receiving to shipping into a warehouse task sent to an RF device.

Every physical move is a warehouse task; tasks are bundled into warehouse orders and confirmed by scanning on an RF device.

Comparison

Three options, three kinds of warehouse

The first decision for a warehouse coming from LE-WM, or a new one, depends on process complexity and automation.

  • Stock Room Management

    Permanent part of LE-WM

    • Aimed at simple stockrooms
    • Runs on the LE-WM data model
    • Receipts, issues, moves, RF, counts
    • No waves, VAS, yard or cross-docking
    • Needs S/4HANA 1909 or later
  • EWM Basic

    Included in S/4HANA, embedded

    • Receiving, shipping, internal moves
    • Task confirmation by RF
    • Physical inventory, warehouse monitor
    • Quality integration with QM
    • SAP's default for new installs
  • EWM Advanced

    Additional license

    • Wave management and slotting
    • Labor and yard management
    • MFS for conveyors and automation
    • VAS, kitting, cross-docking
    • JIT supply to production
    • Decentralized is always Advanced

Scope

Typical scope of our SAP EWM work

Current state

From LE-WM to SAP EWM in S/4HANA

  • LE-WM is not target architecture in S/4HANA. On-premise rights to task and resource management, waves, VAS, yard, cross-docking, automation interface and decentral WM ended on 31 May 2026.
  • The rest of LE-WM has been permanent scope since 1909 as Stock Room Management, designed for simple stockrooms; waves or automation point to EWM.
  • Embedded EWM has been part of S/4HANA since 1610 and shares its master data. Decentralized EWM (S/4HANA-based since 1809 FP02) runs on a separate system and is always Advanced.
  • According to SAP Note 2269324, compatibility rights run to end-2033 in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition (new name: SAP Cloud ERP Private); on premise, only CS, LE-TRA and PP-PI reach 2030.

Localization

Türkiye: warehouse and e-Dispatch Notes

  • The right order at the gate

e-Dispatch Notes (e-İrsaliye) are issued before goods leave, with shipment date, hour and minute, and sent to GİB. Order: loading, EWM goods issue, GİB transfer, truck.

    E-Dispatch Note
  • Response at goods receipt

Short or refused quantities can be reported in an e-Dispatch Note Response. Full rejection is valid only before shipment; goods sent back need the recipient's own note.

    E-Dispatch Note
  • Transfers between own sites

Goods moved between own sites also need a dispatch note (Tax Procedure Law Art. 230/5). SAP DRC can build it from the material document for registered recipients.

FAQ

SAP EWM: questions customers ask

What is SAP EWM and how does it differ from classic WM?

SAP EWM is SAP's strategic warehouse management solution for S/4HANA: bin-level stock, multi-step process flows, RF, and in the Advanced scope automation, labor and yard management. Classic LE-WM was the ECC warehouse module; in S/4HANA only its simpler scope continues as Stock Room Management.

How long can we keep using LE-WM in S/4HANA?

It depends on the contract. In on-premise S/4HANA, rights for waves, task and resource management, VAS, yard and cross-docking ended on 31 May 2026. Per SAP Note 2269324, a RISE or SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition (SAP Cloud ERP Private) subscription keeps the right until 31 December 2033. Core functions stay in permanent scope as Stock Room Management.

Embedded or decentralized EWM?

Embedded is enough for most companies with one ERP that want master data and stock in a single system. Decentralized fits warehouses that serve several ERPs, must keep running through ERP maintenance windows or are heavily automated; it always requires the Advanced license.

What separates EWM Basic from Advanced?

Basic is included in S/4HANA: receiving, shipping, internal moves, RF task confirmation and physical inventory. Advanced needs an extra license and covers wave management, slotting, labor and yard management, MFS, VAS, kitting, cross-docking and transportation units. Confirm the exact list against your license documents.

Does a small warehouse need EWM?

Not necessarily. For a simple warehouse, Stock Room Management or embedded EWM Basic may be enough. If you need waves, cross-docking or a conveyor link, or you are building a new site, starting with EWM-based basic warehousing, as SAP itself recommends, is the better route.

When is the e-Dispatch Note created in a warehouse running EWM?

Posting goods issue in EWM updates the outbound delivery in S/4HANA, and SAP DRC creates the e-Dispatch Note from that delivery's goods issue. GİB must have it before the vehicle departs, so the check belongs in the loading and door steps.
